I’ve read the manga for Digimon Xros Wars. Unless there are discrepancies besides the not-so-well drawn scenes, it covers episode one and two. Here are my thoughts.

According to Akari’s website profile, she recognizes Taiki’s prodigy abilities and sticks with him so no one would take advantage of his kindness. *Gets a Dark AU idea* No! The series hasn’t even premiered yet, exercise some patience! *Puts away idea for later* Onto the actual manga, Akari calls Taiki’s mom “Auntie.” Is this just some formal address used in Japanese culture, or is Akari related to her in some way? Like Ami from the Next manga, she isn’t too keen on the whole adventure thing and wants to go home like any normal kid. Obviously, she’ll change her tune as she gets character development and might get a Xros Loader Digivice as well. In promotional posters, she is lined up with Dorurumon and the unnamed, but presumably female pink Digimon. Would she be partnered to either of them, or both? The fandom’s rather antsy about the lack of a main female Digimon, so they might be tilting toward the pink Digimon or the both option.

Speaking of female Digimon, it appears that Nene’s allies are rather male. The Monitormon is voiced by a woman, but women voice act boys a lot, so it won’t be surprising if the ninja TVs sounded like young boys. DarkKnightmon looks male as well, though we can’t know for sure and s/he is made up of two unknown Digimon. Given the general practice in anime of revealing gender ambiguous characters to be male, I’d lean toward male. This somewhat worries me, as I’m slightly suspecting the Digimon producers think that the fewer female Digimon present, the more room for marketable male Digimon. Hopefully that worry will bare no fruit and the girls be partnered with female Digimon who’re kickass like those of the previous seasons.

Back to Nene. Judging from her brief appearance, she seems to be a rather sly sort. Her website profile says she divides her loyalty between Bagura army, Kiriha, and Taiki. So that would make her quite morally ambiguous, which make one wonder what would tip her over toward joining Taiki’s group. From earlier shots, I thought she would be someone with a permanently sad moe expression that would further populate the instant fanbase she’s got.

Haven’t really gathered much thought on Zenjirou, other than the amusing image of someone interrupting one his speeches and slamming his head against a wall, shouting “Shut. The. F*&k. Up.” Not because I hate him or anything, it’s just lulzy.

And Shoutmon. Oh Shoutmon. I know everything has two exclamation points in the first chapter, but for some reason, it’s more noticeable with him. It’s as though he tries to ham things up every time he opens his mouth. Which leads to the funny image of someone pushing a megaphone into his ear and shouting, “USE YOUR INDOOR VOICE!!” He might fit the Boisterous Bruiser role, but he’s tiny, so I’m not sure he counts. Plus he looks kind of demonic in the manga and I keep hearing his voice as some guttural male’s. It would be interesting to see Chika Sakamoto use one of her boy voices for him.

And his SUPREME RULER OF THE DIGITAL WORLD ambitions are kinda LOL-worthy. Does he want to form a Benevolent Dictatorship, or something? He probably needs a load of growing up before he’s fit for such a position, though maybe that can wait till after he takes the thrown. My mind is slavering at the idea of Not-So-Benevolent Dictator Shoutmon. I think cynthia_harrell’s Brainwashed and Evil kinks are rubbing off on me.

As for Taiki, I also don’t have much thoughts on him. I do suspect his morality will be put to the brink in the series, because all Digimon leaders must be pushed to the mental brink before growing up! :D
