Appmon 47 review
Bootmon being at Haru and Yuujin’s school opens some great character opportunities for the pair. I thought Haru was hugging Rei in the preview but he was actually stepping forward with some force at the suggestion Yuujin is someone to be careful of. He knew Yuujin for much of his life, they are close friends, and he believes they hide no secrets from each other. Even with his faith in Yuujin, Rei’s words still prey on Haru. I do enjoy the moment where they realize they’ll soon move onto high school and Yuujin’s brief sad/angry(?) look after Haru wonder how they’ll change a year from now. It makes me wonder how much he’s aware of what’s about to happen and if he feels regret for it. I did like that Haru admitted he didn’t know what his career would be either, not reinforcing any /silly thoughts that not knowing what you want to do for the future indicates you’re secretly a bad robot. Later on the roof where they’re supposed to catch Bootmon, which was Yuujin’s idea, Yuujin gives a fond look to Haru that the scene frames Haru doesn’t notice. This indicates that this is a genuine emotion for him. His talk about not wanting themselves or their friendship to change might tie into his issues but might also allude to the robotic betrayal that is to come and how he feels about it.
As for the Bootmon chase, Bootmon very much wants to reunite with Hajime, but has been sheltered and barely knew anyone, so it’s hard for him to trust and he scares easily. But he’s getting used to the world and weirdness around it, so it’s understandable why Eri and Astra’s efforts to scare him just weird him out and make him want to leave. It’s only when Eri and Astra explain he would be safe and back with Hajime and are forced to apologize for chasing him around does he start to consider their offer and lets his guard down enough to be surprised by Eri making a cute face at him. Yet when he lands in front of Haru, he sheepishly says “I’m back” in a way that indicates that’s he’s willing to come along with Haru and the others.
Of course, before that could happen, Yuujin summons a Shutmon who reluctantly strikes Bootmon down. I don’t believe he’s dead since his chip didn’t turn grey, so we might see him again. Shutmon obeying Yuujin makes me wonder if that’s just him following his Appli Drivers orders or if he knows more than he lets on and couldn’t gather the nerve to tell the others. If the latter, that could really anger Gatchmon. With the revelation Yuujin’s a robot, I find the revelation Haru has a important famous grandfather a bit more palatable to swallow. Yuujin was likely sent as a spy to keep a eye on Denemon Shinkai’s grandson and he was only recently readjusted to deal with Haru being a Appli Driver and go after Bootmon. I wonder how Yuujin might come back. They will milk the drama for poor Haru but I think it’d be too grim for a kids’ series if Yuujin really was a lie and then gets destroyed. I agree with others’ theorizing the simulation personality or whatever became alive, and they will find some way for that personality to reassert itself or be transferred to another body.
Next time, Yuujin-bot uses Bootmon to activate something terrible, the city starts turning into data(?), and Haru gets some horror and angst about Yuujin. Apparently it’s the activation of the Human Application project, and the Buddy Appmon are zooming into fight the large Digimon summoned. Since the preview ends with the ground being cratered and cracked, with the Appli Drivers falling in, I’m unsure of them stopping the project right away but I wouldn’t be surprised if they reversed it. I wonder how Hajime might react to what Bootmon’s going through. I guess I’ll see soon.
