Next Life Steps

I’m starting to look for a part-time job. Having been busy with school and only taking volunteer jobs and internships, I haven’t really had a paid job yet but with my schooling over and some prodding from others, I’m getting help finding such a job. A person part of my disability services is helping to modify my resume and put it on a database for businesses to find workers. There are certain keywords the person will input that’ll narrow it to a job I like, quiet part-time office work. I want to leave time for my writing passions and as many people found out during the pandemic, work isn’t the be-all end-all of life, especially when some employers will let you die for profit. For all those reasons, if it takes a bit to find a job, I’m more than willing to wait.
I’m going to join my local library’s writer group. The previous writing group I was a part of got canned by the pandemic and when I contacted the person running it, I didn’t get any response, but I heard that she might be busy with family matters. My local library’s writer group is monthly and held on zoom, the latter of which I like. Since the pandemic, I like not having to drive everywhere if I don’t have to. I still need to confirm I’m a part of it but November’s meeting is a couple weeks off, so I have time. I like talking about writing and stories and it’ll be great practice and improvement of my social skills.
From now on, I’m going to keep my movie reviews short. It was a lot of work and much of it just became recapping the plot. I only want to write down my thoughts and not much more. You’ll see that in my cut review of Godzilla vs. Kong.
I finally saw it on HBO Max after missing it due to the pandemic. It’s definitely a messy film but with the director of the infamous Netflix Death Note film, I’m surprised it’s not a trash fire. I did like some of the characters and details. Jia and her bond with Kong and the others characters was magnificently acted. Bernie was entertaining at times. Godzilla and Kong’s fights after the revelations were kind of amusing because it stirred from a lack of communication and the two monsters wouldn’t be fighting if Godzilla could just explain the situation. But there are the flaws of some dropped plot points and character details. I heard these get addressed in the novelization but a viewer shouldn’t need ancillary material to clear that up. I know people come for the monster bash but at least some of these dropped character or plot details could have been explained in a few lines of dialogue. I’d have liked more exploration of the Godzilla and Kong ancient enemy story and how them joining forces at the end changes that.
In these current covid and political times, Bernie referencing other classic conspiracy theories is wince inducing, especially the reference to the anti-Semitic lizard people theory. I don’t mind some outdated or crack views like flat world or hollow world being used in fantastical movies, since those are great fantasy world concepts but I understand the concern I’ve seen others express that’d encourage the belief of those views in real life. It’s also troubling that the two of the major characters of color, Maia Simmons and Ren Serizawa get killed off with barely any explicit development for their motivations or how they relate to their parents. At least Ren Serizawa’s death’s ambiguous enough that you can hand-wave him surviving in some way. I liked Jia, Dr. Lind, and Dr. Andrews as a trio. The hollow world was quite beautiful and interesting. I liked the original monster designs that we saw in the hollow world. MechaGodzilla was cool looking and I like Godzilla and Kong put aside their enmity to defeat him, and how they might relate going forward. The film could have been more but I enjoyed the parts I did and it’d be an okay close on the Monsterverse if this’s the last entry. Now I hope Toho goes along with its proposed plans to resume making Godzilla films this decade.
Have a Happy Halloween tomorrow. I’ve been listening to spooky stories when I can find the time. I’ve been enjoying Digimon Ghost Game and hope it keeps up its momentum. Until November’s end, see you!
