New Mentor and a Couple Switch Ups
Apr. 30th, 2026 08:51 amI switched the subjects of my copying exercise. To remind everyone, I copy a story by hand for 20 min before I start writing so it could influence my writing style. On the weekends, I copy the dialogue for a TV show and on weekdays, I copy a well-written fanfic. I switched it around doing the TV show copying exercise for 3 weekday weeks and I liked how it influenced my dialogue. I did this initially to make up for some missed writing days. It might be a coincidence but I noted I found more things to edit for my weekend draft 4 story after I accompanied it with the copy exercise with the fanfic. I might alternate going forward, though I want to get used to the usual routine first.
After 2 months of being sick and unable go out, I finally saw the film Goat just before it left my theater. It wasn’t reinventing the wheel but it recycled the usual sports story tropes well. The lead is a short goat named Will who dreams to play roarball, an extreme basketball analogue which’s dominated by large animals. Will knows his talent and vouches for it, but is humble and will help someone in need. He gets pushed around, so he’s thrilled to join his childhood favorite hometown team the Thorns and work with his idol Jett. But Jett quickly dissolves that idol image when she attempts to sabotage him and doesn’t let him play on the field. I have to say, it’s not very ethical that Will a teenager was allowed to participate in such a dangerous sport. Jett after not winning for so long understandably doesn’t want to be pushed aside but sees Will as a threat. I liked Will remains social with his community and even back pays rent he owes to a landlord even if said landlord kicked him out and wasn’t going after him for the money.
I also liked he helped bring Jett out of her shell and persuaded her to accept teamwork. Their teammates didn’t get as much development but they changed for the better and I could see why they were protective of Will. My favorite was Modo, an eccentric but well-meaning komodo dragon teammate who the film staff definitely designed to be a furry “thirst-trap,” as said in the film itself. Will’s motivation involving fulfilling a promise to his dead mom is typical but well done. The ultimate rival team led by Mane Attraction is a classic bully team I’m not a fan of in sports stories, since I think that’s where the opposing team can be nuanced. The Thorns’ manager betrays them by signing them to another city and makes Jett revert to her loner ways, making the team disband. She apologizes and they get back together, with Jett eventually sacrificing her chance so Will can take the winning shot. All predictable but executed in a good manner. Modo turns out to have saved the team with his mastery of Uno, though his teammates are wary since he’s the owner now. At least this group is victorious and satisfied. There’s a gross fart joke involving a mask, vore threats, sizeism, and endangerment of a teenager. With that in mind, if this film sounds up your alley, go see it.
That’s all for now. Free Palestine and stop the attacks on Lebanon and Iran. May Trump and his ilk fall and there be justice. Until June, see you!
