Earlier this month, I decided to see Fantastic Four: The First Steps. Since Bargain Tuesdays are permanently booked with mom helping a relative, I went the first Wednesday some hours after I got a haircut. Somehow I managed to balance writing twice than usual in between all that. The film itself was pretty good. Not as notable as Superman but it’s nice to hear this is the first time Marvel’s first family got portrayed correctly on the big screen. Like Superman, it jumps to after their origin. They do feel like a family who bicker and disagree but can resolve their issues and love each other. I was interested in Ben Grimm but he didn’t get much focus as the others. Nevertheless he was a sweet big guy who’s gotten more comfortable with his form and is charming enough to even get romantic interest from a woman living in his home borough. Also nice the filmmakers were a bit more explicit he was Jewish and hired a Jewish actor. I also thought there would be viewers who would find Grimm’s Thing form hot. Reed Richards was well portrayed as socially awkward and compulsively taking devils’ advocate positions but ultimately well meaning. He does care about his new son and worries his family’s mutation would be passed to him. Sue Storm was good as a moral but certain woman and her speech to the crowd she won’t sacrifice her son or the world was a highlight. Her being a big part of Galactus’s defeat was nice.
Her actress being such an irl nerd for the team and her character was neat to hear about and hopefully she can have influence there. Johnny was a nice balance of flirting and jokes with compassion like when saying to an insecure Ben Grimm that a beard would look good on him. Him being able to translate a language is an apparent deviation but since he was an astronaut and interested in space, it makes some sense. The space exploration action was pretty good and gave a sense of adventure. The plan to fight Galactus including evacuating New York City demonstrated the 4’s care. The Silver Surfer’s arc was good and shows how she tried to emotionally disconnect for her duty but she still was upset about the planets sacrificed and it led her to pushing Galactus through the portal. The son Franklin resurrecting his mother after she died was a good fulfilment of Chekov’s Gun where Galactus said the baby had powers but had yet to display them. Herbie being present as a help robot was a nice embrace of the comic book weirdness. The only drawback is Dr. Doom in the after credits scene won’t be played by a Romani actor. Other than that, I recommend this film to all interested.
That’s all for now. Free Palestine and free hostages on all sides. Down with Trump and all conservatism that’s connected to fascism. I’ll see you at the end of September.
